An exhibition by five acclaimed artists, David Berry (Roberts alum '75, and grandson of former college president Merlin G. Smith), Emanuele Cacciatore, Aaron Gosser, Janet McKenzie, Kathleen Nicastro, and Rachael Van Dyke (Roberts alum '94), will be on display in the Davison Gallery from February 28- March 28, 2011 at Roberts Wesleyan College. A reception for the artists will take place, Friday, March 11, from 5-7 p.m.
Artists Berry, Cacciatore, Gosser, McKenzie, Nicastro, and Van Dyke employ various strategies of composition, perspective, and techniques to explore the theme of Thaw. Using the media of paint, the artists find inspiration in psychological and spiritual realms with introspective sensibilities that create internal landscapes, thus pushing the boundary between one realm and another. Some artists employ traditional expressions of the geographical landscape, while others tap the metaphor to intersect both abstract and representational imagery by using brush strokes and forms actually constructed and paint and surface expertly manipulated. The collective melding of material demonstrates the complex mysteries of life and displays how each artist creatively addresses the concepts of thaw, change, or acclimation at the confluence of recognition between viewer and the artwork.
Thaw: Painting Confluence & Influence is one of the many exhibitions taking part in the area-wide collaboration sponsored by the Regional Gallery Director’s Forum this spring.

Supported by the RWC Division of Visual Art since 1996, the Davison Gallery operates as an integral resource within the Division's academic program and as a cultural center for students and the greater Rochester community. Working with the Division's curriculum, the exhibition program examines the works of accomplished and emerging local and international artists and alumni. Encouraging students to engage with original works of art fosters dialogue in and out of the classroom. The Davison Gallery curates six to nine exhibitions annually that explore various mediums, processes, and genres. Gallery colloquies or lectures accompany all exhibitions that are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.roberts.edu.
