In order to enter the United States, a prospective student must obtain two important documents from the U.S. government: a Form I-20 and an F-1 student visa.
Form I-20
A Form I-20 tells the U.S. government you are eligible for F-1 Student Visa Status. It certifies (1) you are or expect to be a "bona fide" student; (2) you meet the College's admissions requirements; (3) you will pursue a full course of study; (4) you proved to us you have enough money to study and live in the U.S. without working illegally or suffering from poverty. You need a Form I-20 to obtain an F-1 student visa. Several web sites have complete information on obtaining a Form I-20, including.
F-1 Student Visa
The United States welcomes international students to American schools. Our government requires an applicant for an F-1 student visa come to this country specifically to pursue an academic program at an institution recognized by the U.S. government, and have a valid educational purpose for coming to the United States. The student can stay as long as he or she is enrolled in school. The U.S. Department of State has a website with complete information on obtaining an F-1 student visa: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1268.html.
