Seven Easy Steps to Filing a FAFSA

Using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool

The US Dept of Education recently created an enhancement to the FAFSA filing process called the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.  This process will make providing accurate 2011 federal income and tax information on your 2012-2013 FAFSA faster and easier than ever before and will streamline and expedite the processing and verification of your financial aid. We recommend the following steps:

  1. E-File your 2011 federal tax returns as soon as possible.
  2. Keep your W-2's even if you do not file a return.
  3. Wait for the IRS to process your return - approximately 2 weeks.
  4. File your 2012/2013 FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool OR use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to update your FAFSA .

To research loan and payment options:

Tuition Managment Systems provides an independent, informative and interactive view of your available options (ie. monthly payment plans, combining loans & payment plans, or education loan options).

Once all federal loan options have been exhausted, some students choose to apply for private, alternative loans.  These types of loans are applied for directly at the lender of your choice.  These websites might assist you in finding the loan options that are right for you as we do not maintain a preferred lender list.

 Alternative/Private Loans

Fin Aid: The SmartStudent Guide to Financial Aid: Student Loans is a comprehensive and informative website that offers financial aid advice and tools for students including a private (alternative) loan comparison chart of lenders.

Student Lending Analytics has developed a list of private loan options for students who need a focused resource for help in finding a private student loan.
